Wilmington's annual "People's Festival - Tribute to Bob Marley" is a musical event with a lot of history behind it.

Wilmington native Ibis and his wife Genny became friends with Bob and Rita Marley back in 1969 and the two families have remained close friends ever since. Bob Marley, the leader of the Wailers and the world's most famous and influential reggae musician, died in 1981 after a short bout with cancer.

In honor of The Honorable Robert Nesta Marley (a month before his death, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit), Ibis wanted to draw attention to the connection Marley had in Wilmington. This year marks the 16th consecutive year that Ibis and his wife are staging the annual event.

The music and arts festival will be held this Saturday from noon-10 p.m. at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington. Slated to perform this year are Sister Carol, I-Wayne, Leon & the Peoples, Judah Tribe: Heartical Reggae Band, Dax Lion, Spokey Speaky, Eme & Heteru, Katriel & the Medicine, Richie Lane and Bigz General.
